Michael currentlydirects the operations of the Outdoor Pursuits Program in the PE & Rec Department at the University of Oregon (UO). A life-long outdoor adventurer, Michael was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon Canada. From an early age he had an intimate connection with the natural world that ultimately inspired him to pursue a career in outdoor education. After many years instructing for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) teaching backpacking, climbing, ski touring and mountaineering courses, he earned his MS in Outdoor Recreation at the UO. Michael currently teaches a variety of courses including backcountry travel, safety and survival, and trains aspiring outdoor leaders.
In addition to his current 9-month position at the UO, Michael is a metal artist and owner of Get Bent CopperWorks (specializing in nature-themed garden art), and Michael Strong Photography.
To create a more enriching and intimate photographic experience, Michael utilizes a full-frame digital camera and vintage manual focus lenses to compose all of his photos. He does his own post-production computer editing and partners with a company that specializes in printing on metal.
Michael prefers this print medium because metal prints have more depth, clarity and longevity than conventional prints, as well as the ability to be displayed outdoors.
